When I whispered nighttime
Ballads in your ear
And we fell asleep to
The sound of each other’s breathing?
When Suzy Rae was a straight-A student
And never smoked pot
When Jimmy B got accepted to Yale
Before his father beat him to death
When I kissed your cheek
And that meant more than
A fifth of gin does today
