Light in the Fog

April 12, 2011
A child is shaking - traumatized, anxious, and scared.
‘Don’t worry,’ someone whispers, ‘God is with us, always here.’
The child grows smaller yet, plagued with more fear.
(She’s hell-bent for an addict-mother.)

We’re supposed to be perfect, live life as we’re told
What will we see when we look back, nostalgic and old?
You may be bought, but I’ll never be sold.
(I’m hell-bent for thinking otherwise.)

A cruel smile’s on her face, eyes shiny and mean
‘I’m better than you,” she hisses. But it seems
Her Christian duty is unfulfilled; her soul – unclean.
(She’s heaven-bent for spreading the word.)

‘We want your love’ (we want your cash)
‘God wants it too’ (we’d never last)
Then he turns with a smile (wonder who they’re laughing at?)
(He’s heaven-bent for collecting for the church.)

Homosexuality’s a sin? I wasn’t aware
That a loving God would so greatly care
Enough to damn you, an afterlife of despair.
(She’s hell-bent for uncontrollable love.)

Can’t feed his children, or locked in a cell
But they’ve got enough to donate until
They’re sure their souls are safe from hell.
(They’re heaven-bent for giving all they’ve got.)

I really don’t care what you believe
It’s your life; what I say’s what I mean.
But please stop trying to brainwash me.
(I don’t believe in hell.)
