A Long Weekend

December 9, 2007

After 10 months of teachers and tests
We finally get a little rest.
No more essays, no more rules
It’s time for late nights and swimming pools.
But then it’s time once again to waking up at dawn
Walking across the dew- painted lawn.
Finishing homework on the bus
Busy hallways, all the fuss.
I must explain in 100 words, no less
Of why September is the best.
Of all the hard work we students do throughout the year
We count the days until summers near
Then we celebrate for our vacation at last
If only it didn’t go so fast.
I admit I love returning to school
Seeing what’s new, what’s out and what’s cool.
Meeting new friends, seeing old ones as well
New homework assignments, rumors to tell.
Returning to school has its ups and downs
But you never know when something new will come around.
I love the smell of fall leaves in the air
The way the wind whips my face, and blows my hair.
Soon winter will come with frost and fires warm glow
Lawns covered by a blanket of snow.
But what I love most about returning to school,
Is the chance to have a fresh start, to begin a new.
