15 years in the making.
With humble roots
This puny sprout sprung
Into a splendid sequoia.
Across from the bamboo shoots
Tree defies gravity and climbs for the sky.

Many years passed,
Tree endured through the harvest.
This brave sequoia has faced the harshest
Winters with frost-bitten leaves,
It held strong when the snow decided to rest.

Even in the later years,
When Jodie and Evan scarred Tree
With names and an odd curvy shape.

But not even Tree was strong enough,
To stop the man with the shirt of squares.
His toothy stick made quick work
Of Tree’s progress.

A single leaf dances on the path.
It’s seen by one man,
Stepped on by another.
You may have seen this exact leaf,
You may have stepped on this exact leaf.
All that remains of Tree.

The author's comments:
I saw a man dying, and he said "please stop looking at that leaf".
