Day to Day
Day to day the things I carry are constant…
A small folded note lies in my hoodie pocket
An IPod headphone blaring music in my left ear
My cell phone in the right pocket of my jeans
And my KU lanyard with the keys swinging
To me
These items mean more than the average eye can see
The hoodie I wear
Is my way of hiding my insecurities.
The small folded note in my pocket
Reminds me I have a reason to keep going.
The IPod headphone in my left ear
Lets me imagine what could be.
The cell phone in my right pocket
Pulls me back to reality.
The KU lanyard with my keys swinging
Is my way to escape.
In my head I hear my mother’s words
“If you find 5 true friends in your life you are lucky”
If you were to open the small folded note
You would find it was covered in tears
For it was written by my best friend who saved my life
So it sits in my hoodie pocket to hide that insecurity.
In my head I listen to the music playing
“Talking to the moon tryin’ to get to you, in hopes you're on
the other side talking to me too”
If you were to pull the headphones out of my left ear
You would find it’s not what you thought it would be
For its not what you would expect from my hard exterior
So it goes on blaring in my left ear because that’s my weak side.
In my head I imagine a text
“BTWITIASILWU”
(By the way I think I am still in love with you)
If you were to pull my cell phone out of my right jean pocket
You would find 1 new message received…
For its not what you think it reads or I imagined it did
So I place it back in my right pocket it’s my stronger side so it’s easier to deal with disappointment.
In my head I hear my madrina’s voice
“Dia! It’s so good to see you! I missed you mama
(Insert her warming smile and her tender embrace here)
If you were to get in the car and drive to where my madrina lives
You would find a road trip to NY my home town where most mi famila vive
For its where some of the most important people of my life live
So I put the key in the ignition because I’m ready to go.
