The Metal Bird
I did not go along the paved walk
Like my parents and brother did
I drifted through the woods along its side
Where the animals hid
I saw maybe two, maybe three
Brown squirrels crawling along the trees
I saw the birds, all huddled in their nests
Their babies squawking at their best
I got caught in this world
I drifted away
I wanted to stay in those woods
Where the animals played
But then I heard a sound
A rumble growing near
I looked to the sky
Stricken by fear
But there was just an airplane in that sky
Why I was so scared, I don’t know why
Maybe I felt how the animals had
Confused by such a metal bird, something they didn’t understand
