ME believes in ME!

A glinting smile lights up my face,
Echoes of laughter in my heart make place.

Playing hide-n-seek in my yard,
Having fun with fellows and we laugh so hard.

Sleeping with comfort in the lap of my mother,
Even enjoying the moments, when teases my brother.

Looking up to the sky, waiting for the shooting star,
Waiting to wish, waiting to grasp, and knowing it’s not that far.

Broken tooth under my pillow, believing a fairy to come,
Waking up in the morning, listening to the nightingale hum.

A surge of water smacked my face,
I yelled, tried to clutch but couldn’t find a place.

So charming, such amusing, so stirring was my dream,
Now it’s all over, it’s all rubble, nothing has a gleam.

The unbridled flood, took me so far,
Wish I could get my family, but there’s no shooting star.

Those echoes of laughter are all sluiced away,
Can I get back my family and make them stay?

Gone with the flood is the lap of mother,
Missing are all moments when teased my brother.

Look up to the sky, waiting for the shooting star,
Waiting to wish, waiting to grasp, but now it’s too far.

No fairy, no nightingale, I am all left alone,
In this camp, strangers all around, I can just shed tears, just moan.

Why did I, so innocent, suffer all this grief?
When it is they who do all, not am I the thief.

Who is to help, who is to lend a hand?
My utopia is destroyed and I’ve lost my land…

I have composed this poem for those helpless children who have lost their families and their future in the catostrophic flood that hit Pakistan in this Monsoon of 2010.
