It Looked Like Rain
she came in, she shut her door
I couldn't see her anymore
he came in next, he laughed at me
I didn't mind, 'cause I was free
I didn't yell, or cry in pain
but all the while it looked like rain
she snapped me quick, she called me names
her angry words bust into flames
he glared me fast, eyes freezing cold
he stopped me first, an easy scold
I didn't whine or dare complain
and all the while it looked like rain
she shut me up, she shut me down
her muddy cackle, an eerie brown
he watched me trip, he watched me fall
no help connection, he built that wall
I didn't see, an empty train
and all the while it looked like rain
she brought me up, she will tell
her nothing words, a broken bell
he left beside, he never knew
he drove once mad, and he was through
we didn't care, we can't remain
drops slipping small on a window pane
we mustn't smile, we couldn't feign
and all the while it looked like rain
