Up and down the city streets

Up and down the city streets
A child walked alone
On the corners the beggars weeped
Yet the child walked alone
In the alley the shadows blinked
Yet the child walked alone
On the street the mice squeaked
Yet the child walked alone
A lone dark house stood before him
And the child approached it alone
With every step the front porch creaked
Yet child continued alone
With every knock a loud eco sound
And that child waited alone
And for a time no one answered
And the child stood alone
A harsh wind blew straight through his rags
And the child stood alone
The four seasons came and went
And the child still stood alone
I looked at him and he stared back
And he stood staring alone
As I stared he started to fade
That child standing alone
I blinked my eyes and he was gone
That child that stood alone
The front porch stood empty
Where that child was alone
The door had not opened
For that child that stood alone
The promise of an answer
For which the child came alone
Never was fulfilled
So the child stood alone
While I was watching
That child stood alone
While I failed to act
The child stood alone
And while time passed me by
The child remained alone
My life kept on going
Though the child stood alone
And when the child left
It was I who stood alone
And where the child went
He never again was alone
