The assignment read,
Introduction of self,
Using this old poem from off the shelf.
Use paper, ink or even glue,-------
Imitate his style, but show me you
This is me,
Or is it him?
Where does he end, and I begin?
I am sixteen, neither black nor white,
For I forget to see in colored glasses,
born in the Valley.
I started school there, then Colton, then here
to this school above most standards.
I am of a minority within my class.
The bus from the mall leads back to home,
through Loma Linda, then I cross Barton,
Hospitality Lane, Washington, and I come to the hill,
the winding hill, where I take the bus
up to my home, go to my purple room,
and scribble out this page.
It's hard to realize from here in,
Which part is me, and which part is him.
But I guess I'm what I feel and say, Can you hear me?
Or is he in the way? Hear me hear him--us two—him, me.
Can you see the irony?
(I can hear him, too.) Me who?
Well, I like to eat, sing, sleep, and play ball.
I like to text, laugh, rejoice, and create harmony.
I like an iPod for a birthday present,
or CDs like Train, Li'l Wayne, or Singing in the Rain.
We're the same, but I'm different. We may be the same race,
but I wear a different face.
So will my page be different that I write,
Being that I'm both black and white?
But it will be
a part of him, the poet.
For though we are not exactly alike
It is with his voice, this page I write.
That's high school.
I do what I am told, by the powers that be,
completing assignments that aren't totally me.
Yet after it's done, I've taken on someone
As I learn from him, you learn about me.
Although his era is over—and done.
Mine is set free.
This is my page for English AP
