Christianity to Capitalism
Sit up straight.
Keep eyes fixated on the pulpit.
Don’t shift weight or dare to scratch-
that pagan of an itch swelling on that devil of a nose.
Walk briskly, eyes front. Why doesn’t he get a job?
Keep the smoke breathing out the chimneys,
and never in the lungs,
because it is all about making money, son.
A weekly convention rather than habit.
A convincing charade, an aesthetic display.
Raising capricious hands to the ceiling,
A farce not even he believes.
