The simple sweetness of the ocean mist,
The waves keep the silence at bay,
I sit with you on a weathered log,
As we watch the dawn of the day.

You look straight out at the edge of the sea,
The grayness covers your smile,
I wonder if you are going to leave,
Or if you’ll stay here with me for a while.

Because I know that you want to drive off,
Want to leave this certain grayness behind,
I can tell by the nervousness echoing,
That you simply want to resign.

You want to get in that beaten up Ford,
Kick up dirt as you step on the gas,
Want to drive on the 5 until nighttime,
And hope that the euphoria lasts.

You know that I will come with you,
Run to the car and hop in the seat,
I’ll talk with you and we’ll smile,
And we’ll sweat in the midsummer heat.

Tonight we’ll find a dirty motel,
And make love in the sheets of the past,
We’ll watch the cars driving by,
And hope that the moment will last.

Goodbye to my mother, your father,
Adiós to our schoolmates and peers,
Au revoir to the sadness and regret,
Ciao to the unfulfilled fears.

As I wait for the dawn of a new day,
I breathe in the salt of the air,
I kiss your cheek and you smile.
And you know one day we’ll be there.
