What You Never Knew
burn it down till the embers smoke on the ground
and start new when your heart is an empty room
with walls of the deepest blue
search the ruins for trapped doors,
wonder what you're put here for
I often question that very thing
as I braved treacherous streets,
and kids strung out on homemade speed.
and we shared a bed in which I could not sleep
when you feel embarrassed then i'll be your pride,
when you need directions then i'll be the guide
if I was blessed, I'd walk on the water you're breathing,
to lend you some air for that heaving, sunken chest
with my grin spread, and my arms out,
in my bloodstained Sunday's best
cause I built you a home in my heart,
with rotten wood, it decayed from the start
it's all here for you as long as you choose to stay
it's all here for you as long as you don't fly away
you used to think that someone would come along
and lay beside you in a space that they belong
but the other side of the mattress and box springs stayed like new
what's the point of holding onto what never gets used?
