Ebbs And Flows And Dams This work has been published in the Teen Ink monthly print magazine.

   Phone rings

I'm surprised at her voice as she asks

"Is there rehearsal

Tonight?"

I force it out,

Still stunned

"Yeah, 7: 30."

Oh, the familiarity of her voice

All those days ago

I would hear that voice

Every night.

She was

My best friend

She is now

Lost from me

We would laugh

How we laughed

The things we shared

We still share

Yet they seem superficial

To most others

But my childhood

The years that formed me

Formed who I am,

They have been built upon these

"Trivialities"

We were alike

With nothing in common

We flowed

Like the ocean to the shore

In and out

But never

Apart.

The day we met, we bonded,

Playmates for always

An unbreakable bond

A bond so deeply rooted

It could only grow stronger.

With love and determination

It could resist being undermined

I gave, she gave

We cared unconditionally

We shaped each other through one another.

Dreams we dreamt, tears we cried

Love and pain, side by side

Along the road

And over the years

Someone built a dam separating us

Separating the waters from the shores

A partition between us,

It was really us, all along

We built the dam without thought

Friendship taken for granted

The safety of our history and our bond

A dam balancing on that bond

An unbreakable bond

All those days ago

I would hear that voice

Every night.

She was

My best friend

She is now

Lost from me

It is raining now

I wish I could make the rain go on

Then it would beat down

Upon this town, upon our lives

Water filling the dry sandy, valley

Ebbs and flows of tides

The shore needs the low

The water needs the high

I've grown weary of ebbs alone

I am ready for high tide

Oh, I miss our flow,

Hers and mine
