   and You leave her with a kiss

wheeling into the enveloping darkness,

lazily drift past sleeping houses

then enter the humming bluish realm

of a streetlight, the pavement sliding past

until your shadow rides you down,

stretching leglong into the gloom

And then the hill;

Gather the illusion of incredible speed,

the dark and whispering air of vanishing summer

whipping your shirt and shorts

Stand in the pedals, knees braced

Trust the invisible surface slipping by,

heedless of the hurtling blackness.
