Our Dreams

Our childhood dreams were a treasure;
Our hearts beat as one, measure for measure;
But what we found when we stretched out our hands
Was a palace made of crystal and sand.

We wandered around until day was done,
Forgetting time, forgetting to run;
We forgot this couldn’t last forever—
Every moment is now or never.

The paradise we saw in the distance
Was lost in an instance,
But, still searching, we’re forging ahead
Towards the place our dreams should have led.

Motionless, we stand in the street,
The world still spinning under our feet;
But despite the threads linking our hearts,
Our clasped hands are being pulled apart.

We have to say goodbye to our heaven
No matter how we long for that heaven;
Time goes so fast, and heaven is lost—
You’re letting go like you can’t love’s cost.

But holding onto my love like a hopeful flower,
I will run through that sunshine shower;
Someday I know we’ll pass by the rain,
Holding on, even to our pain.

Time has passed, and now we’re back at the start;
Once again I will offer my heart;
Even though I can see your back like you’re leaving,
I’m no longer afraid of believing.
