   Spindles of ice

weave a tangle on smooth glass,

a web-like pattern

of morning,

the crystals'

shattered mirror

reflecting white light.

The familiar, chipped green mug

is cold before

steaming peppermint tea

warms it.

Fragrant fir needles

press against

the window,

tapping lightly with the breeze,

a greeting.

The final

crimson leaf flutters

to the ground -

an unspoken good-bye -

then rests,

waiting for

the snow.
