   Centuries of rice grains

packed together

in a rice bowl.

Each molded

in the presence

of unending

love and attention.

Paddy fields kept lush

with both tears and blood

in times of drought.

Open palms caress

the rice bowl as it is passed

from a mother to her son.

He feels the warmth rise

through his veins, up his arms,

tunneling through his chest.
