They told me I could not, she said I could
They told me I was not as good, she said I was better
They told me to stop, she said to go
They told me to use a fist, she said a pen
They told me it was good enough, she said there was more
They told me to be silent, she taught me to speak
They told me to scream, she taught me to sing
They told me to hear, she taught me to listen
They told me I would fail, she taught me to succeed
And I listened to her
And that made all the difference
