Poem for Palestine
Dear Mr. Army man
I see you watching our house
You’ve been there for a few days, and now
Our home you expect us to renounce.
Dear Mr. Army man
What did you expect to see?
A child trapped in a corner?
A mother pleading on her knees?
Dear Mr. Army man
That’s just what you’ll be seeing
But I don’t perceive this as fear
I don’t see this as pleading.
Dear Mr. Army man
Do you see where I stand?
This child is not scared.
Because he does not understand
Dear Mr. Army man
This child is not prepared.
He does not know where his mother is
He does not know why you’re there.
Dear Mr. Army Man
Pleading is not the right term.
A mother would die to save her child,
Her own life is not her concern.
Dear Mr. Army Man
She is not pleading for her life
Because, you see, what she is doing
Is more of a sacrifice.
Dear Mr. Army Man
Is your heart made of stone?
Breaking up our family,
Can’t you leave us alone?
Dear Mr. Army Man
Although my life is at stake,
I still have a certain characteristic
That would be impossible for you to take.
Dear Mr. Army Man
You’ve tried and you’ve tried
But no matter what you do,
You won’t take away my pride.
Dear Mr. Army Man
Our pride unites us, my friend.
As you can see, we will not go down,
We will fight till the end.
Dear Mr. Army Man
We cannot attack
Yet, we continue to fight you
With your guns and your tanks.
Dear Mr. Army Man
You cannot bring us down
You can shoot at us all you want
But we will still fight for our town.
Dear Mr. Army Man
Here is my insight:
You might have won the battle,
But you will not win this fight.
