Peace of Heart and Piece of Heart

Beauty between every blade
Untamed fields discovered themselves—
Cut by a human scythe.

Unassuming and unseen,
Slipped under the surface, Doubt,
The smallest seed of Fear

Quickly the speck sprouted,
Parasitic trickery spread to all,
Reaching outward with ivy-green palms.

Winter, Spring and Summer to Fall,
Bright fields grew doubtful,
Shriveling beneath dark hands.

Lose passion to the clutches of the mind
… and never shall peace come to the heart.

The author's comments:
I had William Blake in mind as I wrote this. I went through quite a troublesome conflict of my own heart and wanted to connect some of Blake's themes with my own-- but with a modern touch.
