Heartbeat
Know what it’s like
to feel the wind
in you face, taste
the fire of
sunshine in your
mouth? Ever felt
yourself shake the
earth, cause it to
tremble with every
other step?
Because,
if you do, then
you know what
it’s like to have your
heart seem to
leap out of your
chest, feel it explode
with adrenaline as
your bare foot
touches the ground—
ka-thump, ka-thump,
ka-thump—
have endorphins
rush to your brain,
making the world
seem fuzzy as you
run, run as though
nothing, no steel
bonds or cord,
could hold you down.
