Another night on the streets
Another box to lay over my head
Another garbage can to look through
Another ally floor to call my bed

A new rag to add to my wardrobe
A new muffle for my cries
A new day to beg for compassion
A new person just walks by

Why didn’t I finish what I started
Why did I leave when I could’ve stayed
Why did I refuse to compromise
Why did I have to have it my way

I used to be something, but now I’m nothing
All I know is pain
A life of making my own decisions
and what have I to gain

Another and another
Day after day of strife
Another wish to have
Any other person’s life.

This piece was inspired by the people I meet every week when I work at my church's food pantry.
