The World

What is this world coming to?
Everyday you hear something new
On the evening news
About something that’s gone astray.
So many things have gone wrong
And I don’t know how
But we need to figure it out
Something has got to change.

The country is under attack
So we’re over fighting in Iraq.
You hear about it all the time
How it’s going on and on
And each and every day
Another life is gone.
But cant they see
The problem at home
Somewhere
Something went wrong.

Guns are being fired
In shopping malls
On our streets
And in school halls
Why is it this way?
Bullets are flying by
Within the house of God
Now tell me with this picture
Just what is wrong?
We have to make a change.

They pay less attention
To what’s in our toys and food
Something gets by them
And it changes our view
What we eat could kill us
And the toys could kill kids
The food is contaminated
And the paint has lead within.
Mistakes are part of life I know
But you hear about it more and more
Something has got to change
This isn’t something we can ignore.

We invent things to help us
But that doesn’t always work
They are meant to make life easier
Not hurt ourselves and our Earth.
The fuel we need to run machines
Is said to be running low
When it comes to drastic measures
I’m wondering how far people will go.
All around us the world is drifting away
Pollution is taking control.
Animals are dying from oil spills
And people are just digging a bigger hole.

I hear about these things
Almost every day
And I always think to myself
How did it get this way?
It used to be so simple
Common sense was something everyone had
But now somehow not everyone thinks
And you see how the world has become bad.
High-powered guns are given to the public
And in the wrong hands innocents die,
People drive under the influence
And helpless families cry.
I don’t know what the world is coming to
I just hope that it will change
And I hope that me and you
Will see it become a better place.

I wrote this poem a couple of years ago. At the time, a lot of the things I included in this piece were constantly on the news. I eventually got so overwhelmed by everything that I had to put something on paper.
