Shades of Blue
Summer for me is not the inferno
Of reds, oranges and yellows
Associated with the scorching days
And the nights of stars and nighthawks
Summer for me
Is many shades of blue
Pale whitish sunrise blue
And slithery blue-green lakes
Blue
Like my cousin’s eyes’ sparkle
My favorite sheets’ airy folds
My favorite blanket’s faded hues
My favorite pair of shorts
Treasured jeans in their past life
Columbia River blue, too
Never the same twice
Sometimes not blue at all
There are crystalline nights
Darkly blue
Like black sapphires
The best shade of blue
Is a midsummer afternoon
Looking up
Sprawled on the cool grass
Into a bowl with no bottom
Tangible
Open
Blue
