Lamp a lament and dark it will stay,

troubled times breeds-trouble does not leave.

Sorrow ensues, but for good reason;

without darkness there is no light.

So the grey sky tells of a mixed victory:

for one, the earth but then the light,

for others, there’s sour tears then night.

Loss and gain go hand in hand,

But this is a message etched in sand:

Therefore kings lavish in lustful delight

to look past the deaths for a deed of greed.

In the end, on his grave, is spit and plight,

because all must suffer to see the Lord.

Dear poetry editor:

I am submitting my three poems entitled “Ode to God,” “What Hope Brings,” and “Lamp a Lament,” for consideration in Teen Ink.

I am a junior in high school and I will graduate in the class of 2022 at Bishop Heelan Catholic Highschool.

Please recycle my manuscript if it does not fit your editorial needs. I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Joseph
