god washed our world away with a great flood;

man and beast battled against the sky’s might.

is that how i will free my hands of blood--

a stormy baptism in the harsh night?

inside my body lives a long fought war,

ground full of fire, choke on smoky air.

above the carnage a vulture does soar,

forever waiting for his bloody share.

i pray to--someone--for one side to win;

patience, son, the fight has yet to begin.

The author's comments:

Recovering from mental illness often feels like a battle with yourself. Part of you wants to get better, to stop living like you have been, and the other yearns for the comfort and familiarity of being sad. The worst part is, you don't know which side you want to win; you just want the fight to be over, so you can be "normal" again.
