A Cruel Circle
I silently ponder the cruel laws of life
and the realisation of their absurd simplicity strikes me
I see how very predictable fate’s paths are
in the mediocre lives we lead:

 intelligence makes us no wiser
 faith brings us no hope
 wit makes us no comedians
a need for warmth tends to make us cold

 How very understandable
the terrible hands dealt now seem to be
and so I come to the conclusion
that the inevitable lives we lead
might only be a joke for the foolish to contemplate

My eyes are suddenly burning embers
an the eccentricity of life I see:

being a friend strings in our foes
 anger never guarantees attack
a taste for rhyme makes me no poet
and those who love aren’t always loved back
