You’ve seen me before,
I visit you all the time.
You’ve known me since you could see,
So please explain,
Why did you fear me so?

People hear my name and think of evil.
People see my face and terror strikes their hearts.
I have done nothing wrong.
I followed my design Mother created,
But tell me why:
Why did you fear me so?

Am I so wretched,
Am I such an eyesore?
Why am I this way,
Why would Mother do this?
I hate my own existence,
Yet still I have to know.

What about darkness is always so evil?
What about darkness is always so cursed?
You never gave me a chance.
You never allowed me a thought of good will.
For this I will make you suffer.

Every noon,
When the sun sets,
I will hide your fears.
Every second before you sleep,
I will torment your mind.
I will sow the seed of fear,
I will reap the horrors of the nightmare.
You were right to fear me so.

The author's comments:
I wanted to give a personality to darkness that would put a different spin on how some people may view it. This is the resulting poem.
