Happy Mother’s Day

good morning i'm born
and soon you're eighteen
you're barely an adult
the world is yet to be seen

so i'll lay here politely
with my head like a cone
and you can slowly digest
thoughts of not being alone

from great mouse detectives
to gorillas named jack
from living on islands
to ankles that crack
i'll love you, i'll miss you
we won't always agree
but my mother, my sister
my friend you'll always be.

good afternoon i am twelve
and you're turning three oh
my voice has been cracking
and i'm starting to grow

my limbs aren't too sturdy
and our hearts are not whole
we've both cried on porches
and we've both been consoled

from great mouse detectives
to gorillas named jack
from living on islands
to ankles that crack
i'll love you, i'll miss you
we won't always agree
but my mother, my sister
my friend you'll always be.

good evening i'm forty
and you're fifty-eight
my youngest of sister's
will soon graduate

i'm watching you and your grandkids
as you you sing songs that i know
of goodnight sweet hearts
and how its time to go

from great mouse detectives
to gorillas named jack
from living on islands
to ankles that crack
i'll love you, i'll miss you
we won't always agree
but my mother, my sister
my friend you'll always be.

goodnight i am old
and you're even older
the night is so cold
and it is just getting colder

we're tired and lazy
remembering the places we've seen
the people we've loved
and the adventure our life has been

so i'll put you to bed
when we're old and we're grey
when you're hair is not red
i'll quietly say

from great mouse detectives
to gorillas named jack
from living on islands
to ankles that crack
i'll love you, i'll miss you
we won't always agree
but my mother, my sister
my friend you'll always be.
