Free To Be
As I sit and watch this crowd,
Partying, Dancing, and Laughing Loud,
And as I listen to them talk,
A gentle slur, and its hard to walk.
As I sit in this chair,
Completely sober, and well aware,
Of the harm that’s bound to come,
Even knowing the fate of some,
When the party starts to slow,
The blaring music turned down low,
I gently rise from my chair,
Silently following my friends, but where?
Out the door and through the grass,
Reaching the car, I get in last,
Stuck with Shotgun, I start to see,
What could happen here with me,
As we start to drive on down,
This long old driveway, headed towards town,
Just a highway between us and sleep,
And suddenly there’s a semi, and I start to weep,
I didn’t hear the crush of metal,
As the driver pushed the pedal,
And again we met a car,
But by then I was gone, gone by far.
I never saw my parent’s tears,
As the doctor’s confirmed, their fears,
I was no longer privileged to feel emotion,
No longer blessed with a single motion
And now I sit upon this cloud,
Quietly watching the world around,
A world of white, and clouds of fluff,
I knew I should have called their bluff
But I didn’t have the strength,
And now I’m free,
The strength to say no,
And now I’m free, free to be, no longer me.
