One More Day
Cap in hand
gown in place
The day you have been waiting for.
All those days spent in class
Nights slaving away,
they all led up to this.
This day of happiness, sadness, and fear.
The future staring you right in the eye.
Hearts racing, friends chatting, parents crying.
The names announced as graceful and worthy steps
are taken across the stage.
Tears flowing like a waterfall.
Smiles from ear to ear.
Diploma in hand
Tassel in its new habitat
It’s all in the past
And what is to follow—distress.
Excitement, nausea, joy.
Choices.
The years to come
New friends to make
Places to see
Things to do.
Yes that is what you think happens.
Yeah, it’s true.
This day has yet to come
The time only dripping by,
and when it comes we will only look back and wish
for one more day.
But for now,
we can only wait.
