Death of the Christmas Tree
The needles quiver,
the branches shake
to the pulse of the saw-
back and forth
back and forth.
Inch by inch
the lifeline is cut.
The roots from the tree
an umbilical cord from
a beloved newborn.
The infant cries
to be brought into the
world.
The trees' silent
protest
remains unheard.
One final slice,
the tree fals with a soft
woosh, and the man
grabs the severed
trunk.
He pulls it along
to the silent trembling
(though there was no wind
within the air)
of the tall,
majestic
evergreens.
