Ode To That Girl
I don’t pretend to know a thing about you
You don’t know me either, of course
You look down and hunch your shoulders
Walking down the halls like you’ve lived afraid
I’m not sure why they call you stuck up
Throw out harsh names for uncategorizable women
Spread rumors like butter over your life
Because you will not speak to contradict them
They tell people you do it for the boys
A mystery much more edible than openness
They know your name from class lists
They say it first and last, like one word
You only get the nickname when you fit
I wonder why you choose not to
Why you don’t stand up and scream
“None of this is true!”
Why you insist on your wrongness
Can’t you see it’s not your weapon?
It’s your red flag in an arena of bulls
So put it down, and uncover the mirrors
That show you and I are the same
