Grandpa,

The day you left us was the hardest day of my life.

Not a day goes by when I don’t miss your hugs,

or the way you always fell asleep on the couch when watching a movie.

It’s been 6 years since you left,

But I still expect you to come walking in every time we go to the cottage.

I see you in everything,

I see you in the fish,

I see you in the boat,

I see you in your old shirts hanging on my wall,

But I can never touch you.

I can never hug you,

Or tell you how much I love you.

You should have been there,

On the day I finally turned thirteen,

On the day I finally turned sixteen,

On the day I finally turn eighteen this year,

On the day of my future wedding.

What I want the most in all the world is to have you here with me.

I miss the best friend I ever had,

I miss running into your arms when I was a child,

Oh how fast I’d run to you if you came back.

There’s only one thing left to say,

The words I’ve longed to say for so long,

I love you.

Katie

My grandpa was my best friend. Around the time of his death, I was going through that preteen phase where you isolate yourself from everything. I blamed myself, I wished I had spent all my days that I could with him. So, please spend all the time you can with your loved ones. You never know how much time you have left.
