Year 6 Farewell
I was twelve in this photograph
wearing a lime yellow dress
The night of my Year 6 Farwell.
The camera flashed
And froze a piece of our night.
I can
almost
feel it now.
The music pumping through our veins
rushing
into
our adrenaline spiked blood
the smell of freedom in the air,
electricity charging us up.
Eliza’s face is
tilted back
frozen in a laugh
eyes like diamonds.
Liam’s hands are thrust in the air,
He’s dancing like no one’s watching
Katie’s face is colored with envy
if only it were her Brayden was dancing with.
The ‘back row’ boys
use a spoon as a microphone
as they howl with the chorus.
Our skin flashes and changes colours
with every pulsating beat.,
this disco ball blotching our skin.
And me
I am
smiling, in the centre of it all
lost in the laughter and music and dancing
in this moment
in this night
that I’ll remember forever.
