Eyes

The eyes, I at first thought
they were happy. Why not?
They were always laughing
but then one bitter word
spoken not by mouth, but
by eye
and I realized
those eyes
were cold and lost
those eyes had been through a lot
knew what pain cost
Then I thought I knew
But could I guess what
those eyes had been through?
