As far as the poem goes, expand. I'm sure you feel many emotions so show them in your writing!!
I'm extremely sorry for your friend. One of my close friends died two and a half years ago at the age of 11 -- I know how you feel. But scientists and doctors are finding new cures every day; lots of cancer patients survive. I hope he is among the survivors.
