They told me

This was my new home.

They suffocated me in kisses,

There was never a second in the day

Where I did not have hands on me scratching my ears and belly

And promising it was forever,

But they lied.

Things changed as the leaves fell and snow piled on top of them,

Chewing the shoe was no longer cute or funny.

Barking when I wanted attention got annoying and angered you Dad.

But Mom if you only knew I didn't know better,

Dad, I really tried to hold off on going potty inside,

But it is hard being home alone 6 hours everyday

And finally when the kids get home, they don’t remember to let me out.

My family, I promise,

If you come get me I will do better.

Let me show you guys.

I miss your love,

Here I don't get a dog bed or my blankey.

I lay here now, on the cold floor with my bald belly face down,

Covered with crawling with fleas, hearing the same angry and sad barks

All day and night long.

One person here,

Always gives me ear scratches, but I know she’s busy.

Today with sadness in her eyes, she tells me “last day”,

Mom I am not sure what that means, but I will be here waiting for you guys.

I will be a better boy.

The author's comments:

My family and I foster dogs and rescue strays, it is such a rewarding experience and I am thankful having parents with such big hearrts. I was taught at a young age that animals are not objects, but living things like you and me. We go in and give dogs a second chance whose past owners abandoned them because they were never taught that simple concept.
