Today I can write the happiest lines,

I can write ‘the cotton clouds lazily cross the sky.’

The hot wind tugging playfully at my hair and skirt.

Through days like this, I rolled in the grass

I’d come home dirty and stained and my mom would yell at me.

I’d hang out with all of my friends,

We lived such carefree lives with nar a worry in sight.

Sometimes I look back and wish I’d never left.

We sang such silly songs the animals would laugh

Sometimes I wonder if they remember who I am

We could never be kept still for very long

Today I could write the happiest lines.

The author's comments:

I wrote this in response to a leaping poem written by Pablo Neruda called “Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Lines.” I wanted my poem to be similar to his but also the opposite, almost like yin yang. We both wrote about the memory of a love; however, mine is about a platonic love whilst Pablo’s is about romantic love.
