Video Games Are Sports

Too many people think of sports as football or soccer,  but what about video games the E-Sport? Video games are sports because it has been recognized by the US, and other countries as a sport and there are professional teams and they are becoming more popular. Time magazine even says that Video Games are sports. In competitive gaming it requires skill and teamwork just like football and baseball. There are professional Esports teams like Faze, Optic, Cloud 9, and many more.

A reason why videogames are sports is there are college teams and professional teams. “Riot Games, creator of League of Legends, is offering $360,000 in total scholarship money to players who make this year's collegiate League of Legends Final Four, more than tripling last year's prize”(Time).

E-sports are beginning to become more and more popular. "College e-sports will galvanize the whole industry," predicts Ian Sharpe, CEO of e-sports streaming company Azubu. “The Kansas City Royals spent more time last season playing Clash of Clans than watching film or taking extra BP”(Apstein). E-sports began their rise in South Korea.

You can watch E-sport tournaments at where they are held or you can go to streaming websites. One of those websites is Twitch that was bought by Amazon last year for $970 million in August 2014. Yahoo originally wanted to buy twitch but amazon beat them to it. . “We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster,” said Twitch CEO Emmett Shear.

In Conclusion, Video games are sports because they have official games and tournaments like regular sports. If you win your tournament you get prize money. They are popular like regular sports and sport channels are broadcasting them. E-sports are paying people to play the sport and be a e-sport athlete. Many people are playing video games for fun and enjoyment maybe you should join the fun.
