Service learning

I have volunteered at the Skilled Nursing Facility at Degraff Memorial Hospital since ninth grade. I feel drawn to keep coming back because the residents have gotten to know me and look forward to seeing me.

By volunteering, I have come to realize how a simple “how are you today?” can change someone’s mood. When the residents need someone to talk to, I am there to listen. When I volunteer, I do a variety of activities, such as, playing hangman or taking the residents for a walk. I help serve coffee and decorate for birthday parties when needed. I also enjoy helping the residents with their exercise by playing kickball.

Recently, I helped a resident in a wheelchair clean out her room. she was so grateful. I felt proud of the fact that I had brightened someone’s day. My experiences volunteering have given me a real passion to help others.
