Where Have the Children Gone?

December 20, 2009

Where have the children gone? You may think I am crazy, that I'm being a typical adult, but the word "child" seems to change in meaning every minute. When I was young... when I was young, it meant that when you were fourteen, you must come home at nine o' clock for bedtime, now fourteen is considered nearly an adult and capable of staying out 'til midnight at some sketchy club with no supervision. The adults and children must have woken up one day with their brains all addled. There are six year olds wearing mascara and twenty year olds freaking out in public. Now I ask you once again, where have the children gone?

The author's comments:
I’m not actually an adult, but I realize this piece is more effective if I tell it from the perspective of one.
