Whats the need for homework?

January 15, 2009
By Anonymous

Why? Homework. Why do teachers give it? Why do we need it anyways? Who made homework any way? People
have different reasons and ideas. I think that there are no reasons to give it. My whole family is
suffering because of it. If we had no homework then teachers wouldn't have to grade it, and they
would be happy and have a life. I would be able to go out more and have a life if there wasn't any
homework. What's so important about it? Why?

Homework affects my family. When ever we want to go out to eat as a family, we can't because I
have homework to do. It just puts us in a bad mood. Nobody likes to help someone with it. Night
after night, after five hours of do sitting down trying to solve problem at 11pm. Getting grounded
for not do it. Having huge bags under my eyes the next day at school. It's just frustrating. Very,
very frustrating! I just hate it. I wish I get to see the day where there is no homework. I hope to
see such a day.

Life would be better for everyone if there was no homework. Teacher, students, parents, ECT. Don't
u agree? Feels like its going to take me forever to finish. John O. agrees. He says that learning is
supposed to be learnt at school not at a kitchen table. People say it's supposed to make you
responsible. We don't get enough time at school. So kids can explore on their own. No it is not;
those are just some of the excuses out there. You can even ask someone that does great in school and
even they will say that homework makes everything harder and they would enjoy not having it.

Tell me. Is there any person in America that actually likes doing homework? No there isn't. It's
a proven fact that nobody likes it. I know even teachers don't like to do homework or to give it
or to grade it. Also teachers are suppose to be paid for teaching no for giving kids homework and
their parents have to help them and tell them what they're suppose to do. Some of the things we
learn we're not even going to use.

I need to know if there's something I don't understand about it. I need answers. So why is there
homework? Could it be that there are reasons for it and we don't know? Is it some kind of
experiment? How does it help you in life? Why?

Don't judge a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes. That way, you're a mile away from them, and you have their shoes. :)

And also homework is a teaching tool. Homework, believe it or not, helps you better retain information.

I'm sorry but this article is kind of silly. What's the need for homework? Well, it teaches time management, an important skill you'll need when you get older and get a job, and it teaches individual studies, and whether you believe it or not it does teach responsibility. It also makes sure you really understand the things taught in class. Someone on here said it. Its easy to seem to understand when its taught in class step by step by a teacher. But when you get home and have to do it by yourself is the real test. Who cares if its boring? Most things in life are boring, that's just something you have to get over.

WOW. so um...this was slightly a silly post. cus um REALLY? ur gonna ask why we have homework? thats like asking why we have school. its to help educate us. do u know how far behind america is compared to the world in education? we let give our students TOO MANY breaks. we should be having year round schooling, more homework and longer school hours. Then our country might not seem so dumb to everyone else...! Thanks (:

Yeah, Homework is misrable. But we have it because the educators have at least caught on to the fact that to learn something we must have time to play around with these new concepts\ideas\facts\questions\answers to really learn them. That's what homework is supposed to do, but it fails. Either way, school could not funtion without homework.

I am not saying that we should keep homework; we deffinatly should not. Instead we should all quit school!!!

I actually like doing some homework. It helps me understand the lesson and I know it's important in the long run, because I learn and the more I learn, the smarter I get, the smarter I get the better chances of a good college, and college equals a good job! Maybe less homework should be given, but not none at all. I mean, "is there any person in America that actually likes doing homework? No there isn't. It's a proven fact that nobody likes it." Since when?? Ok I know most people don't, obviously you, but it's not A PROVEN FACT. This piece seemed like just a rant, sorry.

I am yet again pleased to find another Homework Revolutionary. Although I am not with the movement to BAN homework, I am with the movement to LOWER the amount we recieve.

As much as i hate homework and would love if teachers didn't give it to us, it actually helps us. It gives you some extra practice on the concepts that you just learned in school. It lets you see if you actually understand the things that teachers taught you that in school. Its easy to understand something if a teacher is explaing things step by step for you but can you explain it back?

Please, do not take this the wrong way. But your article is awfully similar to mine, The Homework Revolution. It is almost like you copied it. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

When we graduate university and get a job, well would likely be given projects outside of work that we must meet deadlines on. We need to know how to organise ourselves to meet those deadlines. Here homework may be applied.

However, I have met teachers who give homework just for the sake of making it look like their doing their job, work that's time-consuming but simplistic, that has either hardly and relevance to what we are studying or could be taught more effectively in the classroom in 5 minutes!!

Teachers feel no guilt dispensing homework, (and neither would you, if you became a teacher) because of the homework they received as a kid. It's a vicious cycle that came with compulsory education in the industrial era and no longer has any application but won't end!!

I am pro homework that is given loosely and more practical to be done at home.

I am totally against essays with tight deadlines that have little application and do nothing but cause stress!

Down with Homework. By the way did you know that at some schools. For example my new school. They think we do enough work during the day and their is no need. They think we should have time to relax. We should bring this to schools attention!
