Friends are like potatos, if you eat them they die.

“This is our country so everyone who comes here should speak our language.”
Of all the most annoying, chowder-headed opinions I’ve ever heard, this one is at the top of the list. So many different points surge to my tongue. WE’RE AN IMMIGRANT NATION FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! I don’t remember learning in history how the colonists learned to speak the Native American’s language. Wasn’t it their country first? They didn’t bother learning about the people they were trampling all over, and hearing this makes me think that not much has changed in the last 200 years.
For another thing, so many of the people in America are descended from immigrants at the turn of the century. They were running from famine, or political destruction, or towards a life not spent in utter poverty. How many of them do you think knew more than a handful of English? It strikes me as infinitely lazy that a country consisting almost entirely of immigrants and their descendants refuses to speak anything other than one language. Are we really so conceited that we think ours is the only one worth knowing? No wonder so many other countries hate us.
Also consider this, if you haven’t already scoffed and turned away., while Americans tell others to go learn our language, they usually do. And they can live in two worlds. Whole doors open up to them that we don’t have access to if we speak with one tongue. Do you think that a language is a dictionary? It’s songs and jokes and dancing and life. An language is the soul of a culture. A language is a bridge towards understanding.
People complain that America is falling behind. Well, this is one of the reasons. If you want to change anything about it, go out and get started. Learn some Spanish, chat in Chinese. Parlez Français. Don’t think you can? Well you certainly won’t if you don’t start.
