Cheating in Schools MAG

By Katie, Unknown, TX

There was a time when cheating was rare in schools, but today the whole “importance of learning” aspect has been eliminated. Instead, everyone is focused on making the top ten percent of their class or being valedictorian and we seem to have forgotten school’s purpose. School exists so that we will be educated, not so everyone can cheat their way into being successful.

A lot of students today don’t even view cheating as wrong, and most of those who cheat have been doing it for so long that it doesn’t even faze them. This really bothers me because they probably will never stop to think how bad it truly is. When you cheat, you learn nothing, which is why cheating is so serious.

Our society seems to believe that the more material wealth you have, the more successful you are. This frustrates me because it seems many people have become successful by scamming and cheating their way to the top.

If kids think cheating is normal, who knows what they will find acceptable as adults. Most people think that cheating on one little test doesn’t mean that you will cheat again. Unfortunately this is not true because if you can get away with it once, you are likely to do it again. I don’t think teachers and colleges realize just how much students cheat.

If cheating continues in college, students will get nothing out of what they are being tested on. If a college student cheats on all the work they do for their major, when and if they get a job, that person will be totally unprepared and be a total mess at work, yet be paid for something they don’t know how to do.

I am not saying that anyone who has ever cheated is a crook, because that would mean just about every student at your average school would be one, including me. What I am saying is that cheating should be more frowned upon and kids should receive harsher penalties. This is not something you want to hear, but I truly believe that if there were consequences for cheating, students would actually focus on learning. Then we all would be better educated.

I think cheating is caused by many reasons. Students who cheat. I believe that they have a personal reason . Most parents dream to have their own children making good score for their test or wish for their children to grow up perfectly. But you have to think about the fact that if you do not stand at this point, you wouldn’t know that the competition is very high and it’ll get a lot of pressure.  Children were always taught that if we have a problem, family is the best adviser . But today it was reverse . Most of their problems resulting from family. This time, who going to be the adviser? I think this may be the main reason that makes us even experienced problems with cheating in the present.

I think that if you cheat you're just making things harder for yourself in the long run. For example, if you cheat on a class test where you learn the vocab for a unit of a language class, then you won't have actually learnt it. So when there's a major exam, you will have to study more than everyone else, or else, cheat again. And if you cheat again, then the cycle will just keep going on and it's common knowledge that when you keep going, eventually someone will always catch you out. It's so much easier for yourself if you just learn the basic information in the first place. Plus, when you cheat, there's the potential that you get caught. That sucks. But even if you don't get caught, it's still a really bad thing that you've done. You're making it unfair for the students who have studied and done their work. Almost everyone would agree that in a sports game, if you took illegal drugs and everyone else didn't, then you'd be giving yourself an unfair advantage over the rest of the players, and that's cheating and everyone would just think you're a lame, mean, hopeless person. Well, it's the same thing here! If you're in a test and you have a way of cheating, then you're not just cheating yourself out of actually learning the information, you're also cheating other students out of having a fair assessment. So lame.

i kida agree with you cheating is quite common and can cause issues for the cheater down the road. however as a somewhat smart guy i have had people cheat off me and such and most who cheat seem to be people who do not care enough to do the work
