William Shakespeare, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Rudyard Kipling, what do all of these legendary authors have in common? They’re each renowned for their poetry. Poetry is the genre that serves as the mouthpiece of the soul. Whether anguish or love, it is expressed through poetry. It is the sword that the author wields. He swings it and with each swing he frees feelings from the inner chains of conviction. Funnily, while there is a poem laureate of the United States, there is no prose laureate. In the words of Wallace Stevens, “A poet looks at the world the way a man looks at a woman.” The poet is madly in love with his subject and thus, poetry is the genre of true feeling and emotion.
