Labour without joy is base. Labour without sorrow is base. Joy without labour is base.

-John Ruskin

I go running, running pushing round the track.

This is how it happens, all the time, all the time,

I wish a little less, continue,

This is how it happens, all the time all the time,

And then that sensation, I feel it again, for the first time.

Like I’ve been run over by a truck for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time,

“I’m exhausted . . in my head

“I’m exhausted .”- to my mom

“I’m exhausted.” – as I lie in bed

This is how it happens, all the time, all the time,

This is how it happens, all the time, all the time,

As I lie in bed that sensation again, like I’ve been run over by a truck, running over, running out.

This is how it happens all the time, all the time.

And as I watch Olympic runners sprinting down the track,

Different faces

Separate Places

Same shoes, running running,

Different people
different minds,

I think, this is how it happens, all the time, all the time . . .

I have run track, winter track, cross country, and played soccer. This is one of the first times I have come out and begun to write about these experiences. I also have a photography to accompany this piece.(State Meet 2008)
