So what if it hurts me?

I couldn't sit still. Gnawing on my lip, heart pounding in my chest I told myself not to think of what-ifs, that everything would be okay if I just held onto my own hope... My mother looked twice as anxious as I, her calm face revealing nothing but seeing the emotions fly across her dark brown eyes. After all, it was her mother in there, my grandmother, someone I had always thought would be there. She always had a ready smile and a helping hand. She was Spanish and had taught me the language. Breast cancer had her in surgery, and we were all terrified for her.
"Mom, I'm scared." What other solace can a scared little girl find in this world than in her caring young mother, who is just as scared as she?
Everything ended well. Abuleita made it out fine. Though we were all changed by her cancer. Abuleita will always be my favorite grandmother, helped greatly by almost having her leave my world.
