Drinking Steadily By The Flames This work has been published in the Teen Ink monthly print magazine.

The man speaks about the old country

Of hunting in the fields

Of killing snakes and lizards

Drinking steadily by the flames in the blackness

He speaks of dead men he once knew

Words dribbling out slowly

He continues on

And through it all I look at him

Filthy, hairy, sweaty

He struggles with his English

Beer can rising up and then down

His voice is sharp,

Cutting me, digging deep slices

"This is your father." I hear a voice say

As he speaks of more adventure,

I cringe and pull back

This is my father?
